SENSITIVE BUILDINGS AND USER EXPERIENCE

Abstract
The main debate in architecture has always been whether form follows function or function follows form. However, we often neglect the mental effects a building can have on a person. Considering the psychology of people is as important as anything else when designing, especially in psychologically sensitive buildings such as prisons, orphanages, etc. This study identifies and analyzes design considerations of selective psychologically sensitive buildings and the reasons behind them, the psychological considerations of the design, and the user experience in these buildings. The study also tries to understand the pros and cons of the current building designs. The study uses literature studies, case studies, and a survey to achieve its objectives. The survey helped understand the user experience in these buildings. The study identified multiple psychological considerations in these buildings though many a time these considerations are not being implemented appropriately. This leads to poor user experience in these buildings. It was also found that there are multiple benefits of these ideas being implemented correctly such as better work efficiency, increase in comfort levels, and reduced stress levels in users. There are multiple ways these cons can be overcome ranging from simple changes such as changing the lighting to complex ones such as rearranging the spaces. Psychology is only 1 of the considerations in design however it is a very important one. By understanding these considerations we can become better designers and eventually design buildings that don’t just follow form or function but understand user experience which leads to a better living experience.

SUSTAINABLE FEATURES OF ANCIENT ROME AND ITS MODERN APPLICATIONS

Abstract
Study the past if you want to define the future. Sustainability is the new trend in architecture. Architects design now with goals such as “the most energy efficient building”, etc. But this does not come at a small price. As the buildings grow smarter and use active methods of energy efficiency the costs increase respectively. But history is filled with examples of buildings and civilizations that may have achieved the medals we are striving for now. It is said that unless we learn from our mistakes, we are bound to repeat our mistakes. The domes of Rome and the use of lime concrete are studied for their structural aesthetic beauty but study on their sustainable features is still lacking. The goal of the study is to study, analyze and understand the different methods of construction, ideas used and the different materials that were used in ancient Rome. The majority of the research is done through various sources online. For the data collection, more than the architecture it is important to understand what kind of processes took place in this city and they were planned and constructed. The research shows how effectively these ancient methods will benefit us. History is filled with lessons that will not only benefit us in the present but also for the infinitely many generations to come.
